Set up

Two players. On 6 × 6: six pieces each; on 8 × 8: eight each. Fill your back rank. Light moves first.

Move

Move one piece per turn, horizontally or vertically through any number of empty squares. No jumping or diagonal moves.

Capture

Move to trap an enemy piece immediately between two of yours in the same row or column, then remove it. One move may capture in several directions. The edge does not capture; a whole enemy row is not captured as a block.

Moving between two enemies does not cause an immediate capture. A later enemy move may still capture your piece.

Finish

You win if your opponent has at most one piece left, or has no legal move on their turn. Draw: the same position three times with the same player to move, or 100 consecutive moves without a capture.

On paper, record moves and positions to apply the draw rules. For a short lesson, you may agree a time to stop and discuss the position. This teaching pause is not a win under the website’s rules.

Coordinates

Columns A–F or A–H; ranks numbered from Light’s side. D2 → D4: start on D2, finish on D4.
